Steven Fletcher endorsed Chris Kozier for the Kirkfield Park nomination. The two share the same past in one way - both were president of the U of M students’ association. And Kirkfield Park is in Fletcher’s federal riding.
But when Fletcher put out a press release today congratulating Kozier it raises eyebrows.
He is using his riding staff, on federal goverment time, to wade into provincial politics? And it’s not the first time he’s used his staff to promote another level of government.
Last fall he put out a press release congratulating all the right-leaning Tory types who won seats on city council in Winnipeg. No congratulations were offered to the winners from other political persuasions.
And I highly doubt Fletcher would be putting out press releases congratulating the nominees for the Liberals or the NDP in a provincial riding.
While nobody thinks Fletcher would support a Liberal or NDP candidate in another level of government, the shameless and unapologetic public endorsement and congratulations of a provincial Tory is a bit much.
Fletcher is a federal politician who has to work with both the provincial and city governments regardless of their political stripe. And his staff should be focused on federal matters important to the constituents of Charleswood St. James.
